The tried and trusted tool of buyers everywhere has long been Excel spreadsheets. They’re cheap, malleable and they get the job done.

But are spreadsheets the best tools for the job? No.

There are lots of times when a multipurpose tool is acceptable. You can cut a child’s hair with a bowl and a pair of kitchen scissors, and the results will probably be fine. Likewise, a professional hairstylist could probably garner decent results with the same tools, but at the expense of time spent, ease of use, and quality of outcome.
